This semester has been hectic so far, but I have been doing my best to diligently move forward with THE VENUS COMPLEX. I have never been so passionate about a project before - mainly because so much of myself has never been poured into a project before. I am literally laying myself on the line with this book and revealing everything about me in relation to my experiences as a trans individual. It is both incredibly empowering, and incredibly frightening because of how vulnerable and intimate some of the details are - but, I keep telling myself, I am creating the kind of book that I would want to read.
Growing up as a transgirl in upstate NY, I had no resources to depend on for education about trans identities. Remember, this was the '90s-early 2000s. Trans narratives were still very much in the proverbial closet, or relegated to bit parts as prostitutes, addicts, or comic relief characters when we were shown in the media. It was all so discouraging, and made me believe that there would never be a place for someone like me in the world, so I worked hard to create one, with support and love from my incredible friends and family.
With so little positive representation of trans folk in the media, it is my goal to normalize and validate trans identities and bodies through my words and my art, by divulging my deep secrets and wild experiences, so that people will realize: we are all the same, just trying to figure out where we belong in a confusing world. I think that reading a book about a transwoman's experiences in modern-day American culture, transitioning and unapologetically being herself, could inspire others and, honestly, save lives. Let's be honest: I'm not a celebrity - I'm not a Caitlyn Jenner or Amanda Lepore or Laverne Cox, whose name comes with preconceived notions of fame and status. I am just a regular starving artist, desperate to incite positive change in the world for my fellow trans brothers and sisters.
In order to do that, I need some help. I have set up a YouCaring fund-raiser campaign, which can be visited by [clicking here]. If you can donate, wonderful! I really appreciate it, and every bit will be put toward making THE VENUS COMPLEX as complete and perfect as possible. I am currently in the process of wrapping up the first half, and working on setting up a photoshoot at the NYC dungeon Pandora's Box for the cover image. I am aiming to have the book ready for print by early 2017, and the YouCaring campaign is set to end on December 5th, with a goal amount of $350.
If you cannot donate, please share the links to this site, the YouCaring page, and my social media, just to spread the word and get my name out there! Who knows what may happen!
Thank you for the continued support!
